Thanksgiving and Chanukah Celebrate Our Health and Survival

This particular Thanksgiving holiday is very unique in that it is the first time in the United States that Chanukah coincides with it. (and the next time will not for many generations!) The occurrence is apt since Chanukah celebrates the miracle of survival and in a way,so does Thanksgiving.

But why does it take a National Holiday to remind us to express our gratitude for the little things?

In honor of the holiday and to put things in prospective, today I am sharing some verses and quotes of thanks with you.  Hope you enjoy them!

Frederick Keonig-

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

E. P. Powell-

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.

Seneca-

Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe-

If we meet someone who owes us thanks, we right away remember that. But how often do we meet someone to whom we owe thanks without remembering that?

W. T. Purkiser-

Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving

Henry Clay-

Courtesies of a small and trivial character are the ones, which strike deepest in the grateful and appreciating heart.

Phillips Brooks-

Stand up, on this Thanksgiving Day, stand upon your feet. Believe in man. Soberly and with clear eyes, believe in your own time and place. There is not, and there never has been a better time, or a better place to live in.

E. P. Powell-

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.

Robert Casper Lintner-

Thanksgiving is nothing if not a glad and reverent lifting of the heart to God in honor and praise for His goodness.

Victor Hugo-

To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.

Johannes A. Gaertner-

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.

Albert Pine-

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon-

You say, ‘If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.’ You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled.

So,take time from work and mundane things.  Give thanks to all and Have a great holiday, shared with friends and family.

In the immortal words of William Shakespeare  “Small cheer and great welcome makes a merry feast.”

Happy and Healthy Holiday to Everyone!  And thanks for sharing my blogs with me over the last year.

Optimize Your Website to Effectively Promote Your Health Services

Many doctor’s offices, medical practices, health facilities and small businesses simply don’t understand the importance of optimizing a site, don’t have the money to hire someone who can deal with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or know how to go about it themselves.

Here are some tips for optimizing Your Site:

Is website SEO driving you crazy?

Is website SEO driving you crazy?

1) Make the site content-rich

Whether it is article publishing, ezines or blogs, content is a key part of SEO nowadays.

Published content and keywords is what search engines detect while crawling online and then they index the site and the content.

Incorporating an active blog to your website is a great SEO tactic, but many doctors complain that there just isn’t enough time to write content.

While it’s ideal to add a new blog post every day, it’s understandable that that’s just not possible for many businesses. Instead, consider having a weekly blog and get each employee to write one.  Have an editorial calendar to organize the type of blog, what keyword the blog will be focusing on and what the topic will be in addition to when it will be published.

2) Incorporate social media into your content publishing

Like content marketing, social media is also now an important component of an SEO campaign. There are plugins that you can use on your blog site that will automatically post your blogs to each social media site (twitter, linkedIn, Facebook) Use social media to promote content and engage with others.

Using keywords and sticking to them allows the search engine sites to know what your website purpose is, what your niche is and what types of solutions you provide as well as getting an understanding for who your target market is. Selection of the right keywords is crucial to good SEO implementation.

7 Tips to choosing the best keywords

1) Think like your client  –The first step in selecting the keywords that will work most effectively is to put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client.  What words would this person key in when doing a search (that also describes what you or your business does)

2) Use long-tail keywords- Combine 2-3 words together as a descriptive phrase for your   products or services. Make them specific but not so technical that a person who is not in the trade can still understand and still be apt to search these words.  Don’t make them too vague or generic because you will then be competing with everyone in that genre.  The trick is in the balance so that they search for a topic and you stand out, leading the pack.

3) Look at Your Website- Ask yourself, “What are all the topics that I provide solutions for?”     “What words could be used that describe each product, service or feature”?

4) Look at Your Location- if you are a brick and mortar business, having your geographical location of your business works very well.  When people are searching for a type of non-virtual business, most will search for the company that is closest to them.  E.G. Instead of plumber, one would look for “Hartford, Connecticut Plumber”.

5) Look at Your Competition- See what other businesses are using for keywords in your niche, for ideas. Find them in the keyword tags (which you can find under source in the View tab of your browser)

6) Be Keyword Savvy- Using a keyword tool to run your selections through is vital to success.  While you may have chosen the words, which seem perfect, your clients may not have the same mind frame.  Entering your keywords in these programs will confirm how effective they are.   Not only will keyword tool programs show how effective the keywords you entered are, these programs will also suggest word combinations that most people search for so that you can add these to your list for consideration.

7) Use an analytical program- the keywords that you have chosen are not etched in stone.  Search engine optimization for your site is an ongoing process.  By using an analytical program, you can see which words received the most attention and which words got no visits.  You can then adjust your list accordingly until the results are satisfactory.

While in the investigative stage, you may want to enroll in a pay-per-click program for a nominal investment per month, which will tell you how many impressions are received for each keyword you are working with.  When the results become blatant, you can continue with a free analytical program (e.g. Google Analytics Tool)

Is optimizing your site giving you anxiety?  It doesn’t have to.  Outsource it for others to do.

7 Steps to a Creating a Winning Website

Has your health website been working for  you? Do you even have a health website or are you depending only on word-of-mouth referrals?

Your website provides the first impression that your clients and patients will make with your practice and business. So, your site needs to:

  • Set you apart from your competition
  • Make you shine
  • Convey all the benefits that you give
  • Relate your brand identity in a quick, easy to read and convincing manner.

See how many elements you can implement with the checklist below.

Website Construction Checklist

1.    Office telephone number prominently displayed (on top corner of page)

You’ve piqued interest from leads.  They are on your site and they want to call you but they don’t immediately see how.  Don’t expect someone to have to search for this important data.  If there is no number, they won’t call.

2.    Site is easy to navigate

Don’t assume that viewers will automatically know how to access your information and what the site flow is according to your plan.  Lead them with hyperlinks and plainly marked tabs with dropdowns for more options.

3.    Have a photo of your staff and yourself

Make the experience personal.  Have viewers able to connect with you.

4.    Have a sidebar with office hours

People want to connect with you, not a message service.

5.    Prominently display the office address

You’ve got the viewer to want your services.  Tell them where to get them!  Having directions or a map will further make the site user friendly

6.    Implement Keywords into the site

Your brand may be obvious to your fans and current clients but do the search engines know what it is and what you stand for?  What are the words that people use when they are searching for your services?  These keywords must be stressed on your site so that the search engines recognize that this is what you are all about.

Remember, if the search engines don’t recognize you, prospective clients and patients won’t find you either.

 7.    Engagement

Does your site allow for comments, feedback and general interaction with your clients?  Can they ask questions?  Are there articles to read?

If your service and products are specialized, do you give instructions on the usage?  Keep viewers from becoming frustrated.

Optimizing your website is singularly the best strategy to market yourself and your services.  No matter how good you are, if your website is poor, it is a reflection on you.

Get a good website with captivating content.  This is your way to shine!

Improper Health Writing Can Gift You Jail Time!

This past week, jurors deliberated in the case of TV pitchman Kevin Trudeau.

Do you know what the case was about?

The case centered around inaccurate claims dealing with his best-selling diet book.He advocates the use of prescription hormones and a diet of 500 calories daily, enabling anyone to eat what they want without gaining weight.   Trudeau was found guilty of criminal contempt and can face prison time.  Another related civil case has resolved with a $37 million judgment against Trudeau.

While the core dispute involves TV infomercial claims, the over bloating of statements or success stories on any health issues and remedies can be prosecuted as well.

It doesn’t matter if you are only the health writer and you don’t own the supplement company or medical facility that you are representing.  You can still be held liable.

It doesn’t matter if you are an ethical medical facility or supplement company but the health writer representing you is making exaggerated claims.  You will still be prosecuted.

What is the solution?

The FDA ha strict guidelines regarding what can and what cannot be said in promotions of healthcare products and services, regardless of traditional or alternative therapies.

To avoid liability, you can do one of three things:

  • Have a legal staff that oversees your health copy
  • Pour over and familiarize yourself with all the FDA rules and regulations
  • Hire a health copywriter that already has this knowledge and skills to promote you

Only then can you rest easy!

Effective Health Writing Strategy

There has been a lot written lately about patient engagement and social media.  Now with meaningful use criteria including the ability to interact with patients online, healthcare providers and doctors have been seeking new interactive avenues which includes various social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.  However, the most effective tool for spreading your message may have been at your fingertips all along- your email marketing.

Email beats Facebook for getting patients and service purchases

According to a  recent survey by AW Pro Tools of 1,500 consumers nationwide, one-third of respondents across all incomes were influenced by digital marketing tools when making online purchases. 13.8% said email influenced them, while 13.5% said Facebook did. Both those channels beat YouTube (3.5%) and Twitter (1.9%).

This is news you can implement for your own business.

“The winning strategies for entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 companies alike is to attract a base of raving fans that open, read, and click on the emails you send,” says Jack Born, CEO of AW Pro Tools. “Without a well thought-out email strategy, money spent on any advertising is going to be much less effective, especially if you want to attract high-income clients.”

Email marketing and newsletters is one of the best ways to keep in touch with your patients and clients, informing them about what is new in the practice, as well as attracting new ones.

Can Health Writers and Healthcare Benefit from Instagram?

Chances are that even if you are not using Instagram, your friends and colleagues may be.  And what better way to spread the images such as the covers for your eBooks and snaps of your practice than with a service where images are virally spread!

What is Instagram?

Instagram is a fun application (app) for your smartphone or smart device that enables you to share your life with friends and peers through photos.  Capture an image with your phone camera, select a filter and then share through this app.  You can download the program for free at both the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

Why is it so popular?

Everyone loves a story and images tell them so well.  Think of the adage “a picture tells a thousand words”.  Images can also be posters that relate cute messages or sayings as well as the ever adorable photos of pets that everyone loves and can relate to.

Not only do photos tell a story, they also reflect who you are.  They make you more human so that people can relate to you better.

Instagram uploads instantly!

When you upload your photos, they post simultaneously to your Facebook, Twitter and Flickr accounts without having to spend extra time inserting them into each of your sites.  This enables your followers and friends to all share your images at once.  The app. also allows you to be found on Foursquare.  Additional capabilities are currently in the works.

Security

The fact that you are public on Instagram means that all those using the app or logged onto Instagram.com can view your images.  However, you can opt to have your account private which precludes most people from viewing your pix. (However, since Instagram is used for marketing, having the account private counteracts the benefits) Photos can be synced with your computer and printed as desired.

Currently the  Instagram app is only functional on the iPhone and Android devices.  However, other platforms like WindowsPhone7, Blackberry and iPad will have these capabilities down the road.t
