How to Optimize Your Blog Posts for Searches

 

Sure, you are spreading important and useful information in your blog posts to get your message out there.  But are you being found?  Do the search engines recognize how to pick you up and what you are all about? A few slight changes can make all the difference between going viral and going nowhere.

 3 tips to write for SEO (Search Engine Optimization):

1. Make a list of keywords to use as anchor text that describe who you are and what you do…and then write your blogs using them.

A well-optimized website incorporates the  keywords that highlight what you do and links into your content to give those pages more weight in the search engines (SERPs).

They can work those keywords (both broad and long tail) into their content to keep your anchor text portfolio diverse . Long tailed keywords are 3-4 words that are linked together that better describe something.  An example of this would be Floridian red winged blackbird instead of just bird.

2. Match the Meta tags to Blog Post titles

Meta keywords are what you want the post to rank for, not the post title itself.  Tags help sort the posts into categories for viewers to find when searching for related topics and information.  EAch tag makes a new URL linked to the blog.  Check out YOAST plugin to help with Meta data creation.

3. Link your site to other authors/sources.

Link to other authors and sources; quoteCite other people in your niche or industry, write a response post and argue their own point. They may be quite appreciative and tweet you back or reply to your posts, sending more traffic your way!

How to Spread Your Word as a Health Writer or Physician- Go Viral

 

Readers who enjoyed your blogs  may want to take part in your word-of-mouth campaign, spreading your name and fame. Do you give  them the tools to do so?  Add a  call- to- action, which can elicit passive or active responses.

There are three simple steps that you can implement to get more views.

1. Invite Viewers to Sign Up for Updates

This call to action which is passive, invites viewers  to register for the blog,  to learn more about you and your work. On your blog or website, you should have a highly visible button that directs them to an online form, email address, or social media group where they can sign up to receive updates from you. This will add to your database of interested and prospective clients or patients.  If they are part of a social media environment, you’ll want to reach out frequently, even if it’s just a quote of the day. Consider compiling blogs that have a common thread to put out an ezine or electronic newsletter on a regular basis. This allows the viewers to keep your name in mind and continue connecting with you.

2. Invite Viewers to Share Your Message.

A call to action for your fans or “herd” is an invitation to join your word-of-mouth campaign.

3. Put out a Press Release 

 Have you added a new medical device or treatment to your practice?  Have a newsletter that you are now putting out?  Participating in a community project or health fair?  Let everyone know.  Now is not the time to perform these activities in a stealth fashion.  Giving this information about yourself sparks an interest in you by prospective clients and patients, spreading your name throughout the community. Place a call to action in the press release in the form of writing in to get a free tip sheet or guide for the most popular questions and answers that pertain to your field of endeavor.

Make your readers feel special for being part of your inner circle and helping you out. Reward them with additional information or answers to questions that they may be struggling with.

Doctors and Health Providers- Get Online for a Reputation CheckUp (Do Social Marketing Before It’s Too Late!)

Do you check to see what people are posting about you?

One way patients are now increasingly venting their anger over wait times or other practices that they have been subject to as well as handing out compliments to their doctors, is to rate their physicians and the hospitals that they frequent.  The most popular sites are:

  • Vitals.com
  • ZocDoc
  • Healthgrades
  • RateMDs

While many doctors have been oblivious to their ratings, not showing much interest in them, patients do.  Often these ratings are checked before a prospective patient will schedule an appointment. There was a time, when doctors would sulk and brood about it privately, but now they are more frequently speaking out and fighting their reputations with lawsuits filed against the patients and families according to a Boston Globe article. Citing defamation of character, doctors are responding to negative comments in blogs, rating sites and social media.

According to Harvard University’s Digital Media Project, the results have vacillated:

“In some cases the doctors win, and the patients pull the negative post from the internet. In other cases, the court has dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds that the negative post is free speech protected by the U.S. Constitution.”

Dr. Kevin Pho, a physician blogger who has written a book about this,advises doctors in his Huffington Post interview, to check their reputation and comments about them on a weekly basis as well as filling out profiles on LinkedIn and Facebook to establish a presence online.

It seems to me that when lawsuits are filed about character defamation, they are often made public and more people who might not have been privy to the initial criticism, then become aware of it.  Wouldn’t it have been better to flood the websites and social media with good comments, superior ratings and glowing reports to counteract and dilute the  initial report?  Case studies and published articles also go along way to strengthening credit.

Check What People Say

You don’t actually have to continually go online to see if you are being mentioned.  Register on Google Alert with your name and your keywords.  Whenever you are mentioned, you will then receive an email, alerting you to comments made about you (good and bad)

There are several tools and applications that you can utilize in Twitter as well.

Forget Your Passwords- You Won’t Need them!

Having trouble remembering all your passwords?  Are you changing up your passwords periodically for security? Now you won’t have to!

Biometrics for security have now become affordable and gone mainstream with Apple and its new iPhone 5S.  The new device enables you to use fingerprint scanning in lieu of passwords which are safer, more unique and harder to break into. Data on your fingerprint points remains in a secure file on your phone and is only located there. This surpasses the need to have an intricate password and can’t be guessed the way a pin code may be.

Wondering how to go about optimizing your site?  Here is a list of suggestions that you can implement now to beat out your competition.

1. Choose Your Keywords

According to Google, 77% of patients used search prior to booking an appointment. Therefore, it is crucial that you choose the right keywords that will cause your name to pop up in their search.

Keywords are the words that people enter when searching for you.  A long tail keyword is 3 or 4 words together that best describes what they are looking for.  An example is Type of Doctor+City+State. Write down what words best describes your services and what people would type when looking for you.

2. Provide Unique and Fresh Content

It’s all about educating the reader now.  Providing fresh content that people are searching for will make you stand out and become an authority in your field.  People will view you as the go-to person who has the solutions to problems that people are struggling about.

Health Marketing News- Google unleashes New Algorithmic System- Hummingbird Flies In!

Okay, you’ve tried to rank high on the search engines and  thrive in your target community with the previous animals- Panda and Penguin.  These were systems that looked to see if your website content was spam or actually provided good information.  They viewed your SEO site to figure out what you were promoting and what contributions you made to educating your fans.

Hummingbird is different and it flew in without any announcements!

Hummingbird seeks to view interactions between the website and the individuals within a community.  So, if you are spamming and not answering or interacting with conversations aimed at you, your rank will suffer for it.  And let’s face it, the spambots don’t care…they’re machines.  But you should!

 

Knowledge graph devised.

Google has devised a system called “Knowledge Graph” which seeks to comprehend the meaning or intent behind searches that people perform.  When you type in a keyword, Google will endeavor to list the top places with icons that match the keyword while omitting advertisements. Proximity to the searcher will be taken into consideration so if you are looking for a type of eatery, the ones closest to you will be listed and the ones that are far away, will probably not.

The advantage of the Knowledge Graph is to provide data more efficiently and faster.

 
Risks
If you are doing keyword stuffing to your articles or web pages, you will be penalized, just as abnormal blasts to the site will.  Paid links or nonorganic link building will be sure to get recognized with penalties coming your way.

The irony is, that providing useful or valuable information on your site makes you rank higher than the back links any way. What this does mean, is that you will have to cultivate your value to SERPS and your community, not buy your way into prominence. Consider honing in on metrics like Trust Flow and Page Authority. These have been consistently linked to first-page rankings.

Demonstrate your authority or strengthen your brand and show how you lead the pack in your niche or specialty.

Be content-rich.  After all, when you are searching for information, wouldn’t you want to land on a page that had the content you seek?
