Are You Providing Health Information?

More than half of Americans are searching for health information online.  Are you providing it?  Do you even know who’s looking?

Recent studies have formulated a demographic of those that are most likely to look for health information online.

These people are:

  • Adults ranging between 18-49
  • Those with some college education
  • Typically women
  • Those who come from a higher-income household

Those adults less apt to seek information online dealing with their health include:

  • Disabled adults
  • People over 65 years old (only 29%)
  • Adults with a high school education or who have dropped out of school earlier
  • Adults who live in low-income households
  • Latinos or African Americans

Why is this so important?

Knowing this information allows us to  create avenues of communication for reaching those that need healthcare information to participate in our new system.  Currently, implementation of patient portals are part of meaningful use in electronic health record systems.  Patients can not only schedule their appointments, but also ask questions, seek advice on conditions or get results from laboratory tests.

By having mobile-friendly health applications, minority groups can be reached since they commonly use mobile devices.  This may increase participation among these groups, enabling them to receive health information from additional sources.  Caregivers can close the gap for seniors since it has been shown that almost three quarters of them do go online for health information and help in caring for their charges.

Reaching Out Strategy

One of the reasons why the medical community should strive to reach their patients and prospective patients through their computers is demonstrated by  a recent study.

According to TeleVox, “51% of people say they’d feel more valued as a patient through digital health communications”. Therefore, by having a strategy to reach out, you will be strengthening the relationships of your patients and strengthening your brand as the one who cares to potential clients as well.

One of the most effective ways to reach out is by having an ezine or newsletter.  Include a FAQ section where people can get solutions to problems that they have been struggling with.  Let patients know the latest medical breakthroughs and also the procedures or ideology that sets you apart from the doctors in the area. As the newsletter is shared, traffic to your site increases and more prospective patients from your local area will become acquainted with your practice.

As a prospective patient, I would certainly want to read what you have to offer.

Digital Health Writers for Your Records

Have you noticed that if your physician has already converted your medical records to a digitalized version, that they are now using iPads and other mobile devices?

Have you seen that if your doctor wasn’t using an EHR system yet that they are now desperate to do so?

This might affect how you view your current office or hospital encounters and for doctors eager to start engaging, there is now help for you.

Have you heard of The Black Book Rankings?

They are listed as “the unbiased source for polling, surveys, market research, opinion mining and customer satisfaction results, and recognized globally.”

In their most recent “2013 State of Replacement EHR Market Study” that was just released, they report on the technology market for health.  With the desperate attempt to digitalize medical records for those that have not done so yet along with all those currently using various vendors for their electronic health records, three out of every four health professionals responded to the survey with a “must have” desire and approach for mobile device adoption to assist in EHR operations.  This includes iPads, iPhones, Androids and other tablets.

Since many who had jumped on the bandwagon of digital adoption early in the game are now expressing dissatisfaction with their vendors due to lack of support, this survey seeks to compare the various systems and report on the ten voted best by those responding.

Find them in the chart below.

How to Use Social Media to Highlight Your Medical Practice or Healthcare Facility and Get More Patients

Social Media provides a great avenue to reach your trusted groups, family, friends (and their family and friends).  Not only are you blasting out your message subtly, you are also building relationships with exposure and referrals to a mare greater audience than you could reach ordinarily.

The most common and effective channels include:

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube

Since people are now most likely to look up physician recommendations or to find a doctor in their area, having a page for your practice with URL and username is a must.  Placing a banner, tag line and mission statement on it with prominent positioning for office telephone number, address and call to action is crucial.  The site needs to be easily navigable and also educational.  Most of your competitors are not yet doing this due to time constraints so you will be way ahead of the crowd and stand out above your peers!

Connect your blog posts or published articles to the site.  And remember- we want engagement!  Not only are interactions important but the comments will give a good perspective on things that you are doing right and things that can be improved upon in your practice.  Respond to each comment that you receive which will entice others to comment as well. (Don’t forget to ask for comments).  By linking the blog posts to the page, time spent is halved.  Place a note on the site that comments are not to treat anyone personally but merely to educate about a condition, problem or issue.

Place photos of staff members and office on the site and remember to fill out the profile page with contact information and office hours as well as affiliations to hospitals.

The profile section and photos hold true for twitter and LinkedIn as well.

Implement a free plug in which allows all your blogs to appear on twitter and LinkedIn.  Respond to feedback as soon as possible.

YouTube offers a great way to promote your office and your services through video.  Make a series of short 2-3 minute videos on various procedures that you perform, what to expect, and postoperative instructions.  Patients will be impressed and it will cut down on questions about the procedures by phone.  (all while increasing exposure and augmenting your search engine ranking)

LinkedIn– Start a company page and join groups that reflect the type of patient that you want to attract (based on conditions for instance).

Helpful Tips

  • Remember to educate and also answer questions without naming anyone or any problem that can be linked to a specific individual (remember you are HIPPA bound!)
  • Stay Upbeat.  Readers want to have hope.  They don’t come to be depressed
  • Give them the latest medical news, breakthroughs and options
  • Intersperse some humor or human interest stories
  • Really crucial- don’t forget to include a call to action.  Don’t assume that people will know what you want them to do.

I’m Sorry

Tonight marks the beginning of Yom Kippur for those of the Jewish Faith and along with it a story.

It is believed that for ten days, from Rosh Hashonah until the end of “The Day of Atonement”  tomorrow night, you are being judged from on high – for your good deeds and sins.  A Book of Life is open and during this time you are praying for forgiveness and hoping that by repenting, that you will be written into the book for the following year.  It is a time when your zithromax online prescription fate is sealed- not only life or death but also whether you will face adversity or have a good year.

The story goes on to say that while you can repent for your sins, you can only receive forgiveness for actions that you have done or said that was hurtful to your friends and acquaintances  by asking them directly.

So “Do you forgive me for the sins that I have done upon you knowingly and unknowingly?  I hope so”

And Let’s hope for a Coming Good Year for All of Us!

So How Do You Increase Your Rankings?

It’s all in the communications!  Back links (links that another website points toward yours) determine your rank and the more you have, the more currency for your PR (page ranking)

Ways to Increase Back Links (outside of paying for them which the search engines can detect and frown upon)

1. Join forums related to your website niche with a link to your website with your signature, which not only  adds back links but serves to promote your site as well.

2.Publish articles.  The bylines or source box brings in traffic and new leads.  In the source box, place the website title and a link to the site with a catchy headline or promotion to draw the readers in)

3.Publish an ezine with links for viewers to come to your site.  Submit information about your ezine to an ezine directory which links to your website.

4.Register with various search engine directories which not only give you a free link to your website, but also help to list your site higher on that search engine.  This is usually a free process.

5.Link to related websites

How am I doing?

Every so often, it is helpful to check your page ranking.  Although the method of ranking changes sporadically by the search engines themselves, seeing whether the rank goes up or down will allow you to see how you can adjust your site for more success.
